There's a lilac bush Bloomin' over by the propane tank I found my hat in the rendezvous rain No hope passed out in a pyramid On a wet trade blanket Who might be something to you Nothing but a was on crank Geared up from can't to can't Ramble on a nine day rant Calls himself a bluesman Just burning time to buy gas Let's go slip around the east side of town Only blues he ever had was what he put himself through Barbecue boxcar smokeshack Gas station on 96th Just trying to get that baby out And waitin' on the fifth Sifted through some old grade school wallet shots Found out there on the ground What we do in the late afternoon on the little lake turnaround Swole up at the end of winter Got a real live one in her Livin' like the day was never gonna come Just buying gas to kill time We need to get the hell out of this town Never had the sense to cut back and go to bed Pickin' up art show fried chicken At the tiny little Man Chu Paid for a brown bag tall boy To shut up mister blue Local with a hot piece in his pocket Another on a bike with a half pint Lady asked me why I wasn't out in the field Making her some ice cream, right? Wanna go drink under a bridge? This neighborhood ain't for kids Bullet holes in a pile of oyster shells The only thing separating us from them is All the reasons why those words exist People look at him and say "This motherfucker might be crazy"

about

At the intersection of Saturday night and Sunday morning is the essence of DEMONS+RATIONALS, the latest full length offering from songwriter and performer Brad Fielder. Vice, virtue, superstition, and affirmation – these are the ideations conjured to manifest the eleven tracks on this Shive Records release.

As the duality of the title implies, the sound of the album itself is a mixed one. Raucous and swampy Blues-tinged romps stomp alongside hands-in-the-air Holy rolling vamps. Electric thumpers and acoustic jumpers fill out the 44 minutes of music, featuring an instrumental theme for each side of the conceptual divide.

With ace engineer Jon Atkinson at the controls, DEMONS+RATIONALS was captured live in the room at Bigtone Records in New Orleans, Louisiana. For Fielder’s second production with Atkinson, after 2021’s Welcome To New Hoyle, the stripped down string band was swapped for a mixed ensemble.

All songs were written by Fielder, who supplied most of the vocals and played acoustic and electrified guitars, resonator, and harmonica. Longtime sideman, arranger, and confidant Charley Reeves filled out the low end on sousaphone and bass fiddle. Fifth generation New Orleans jazz legacy musician Brandon Brunious played six string banjo and electric guitar. Megan Harris Brunious, international touring musician (Hank III, Peaches), sang lead vocals on three songs, and also played accordion, percussion, and trumpet. Performance artist and drummer about town Jesse Armerding played an assembled percussion kit of traditional drums mixed with building and construction hardware. Juel Niimi, member of the Oklahoma Youth Jazz Ensemble and Oklahoma All State Jazz Band, rounded out the recording on trombone.

about

Brad Fielder Oklahoma

With 30 years of live performances under his belt, Brad Fielder is a well seasoned entertainer. Paying homage to the American experience, he makes folk music for all folks. It's quirky and relevant, old and new fashioned. While busking as a one-man-band or leading a full ensemble on a festival stage the mission remains the same: Bring the music to the people. ... more
